Appearance
The House Mouse is small with big ears and has a tail at least as long as its body. The Indoor House Mouse are a light grey colour, while the Outdoor House Mouse (Field Mouse) is a light brown colour. The House Mouse has poor eyesight, not being able to determine objects sharply.
Life cycle
The expected life span of a House Mouse is only one year, taking roughly 6 weeks from birth to reach maturity. Mice give live birth to litters which may occur 6 to 10 times in one year, producing 5 to 6 mice in each litter.
Habitat
The House Mouse lives in nests usually made of paper, rags or straw, found in cupboards, wall voids, roofs. The Outdoor Field Mouse lives in burrows. They are very exploratory as they are good climbers, jumpers and swimmers. They do not live in sewers.
Feeding habits
They are a nocturnal feeder mainly feeding at dusk or during the night. Eating small amounts but over many intervals. They feed on grain, nuts, animal feeds, also meat and fruit. Adults can live on low water.
Damage & impact
Mice easily contaminate items with urine, gnawing or nibbling. They can also be a problem in household situations, for example spoiling stored food, nibbling furniture and electrical cords.
