Appearance
Clothes Moths are yellow and gold and 7-10mm in length with a 12mm wingspan. Forewings are silvery with three dark spots. The larvae are up to 10mm. Creamy white with a dark head which is protected in a silk casting.
Life cycle
The Clothes Moth live 3 to 8 months. It has a complete metamorphosis (egg ~ larvae ~ pupae ~ adult). Eggs hatch in 5 to10 days then pupae crawls up towards the ceiling and top of wardrobes. Pupal stages take about 8 to 12 days.
Habitat
Adult moth lives in dark undisturbed areas like under furniture that is rarely moved flying when disturbed by sunlight or torch light. The droppings of a moth are corse like small sand grains.
Feeding habits
Adult moths have sucking mouth parts that feed on available liquid. Only the larvae are responsible for attacks to wool, fur, clothes, and upholstered furniture and felt.
Damage caused
Larvae do all the damage having mandibulate mouth parts. Mainly damaging rugs, carpets or dark areas such as under furniture but their preference is towards clothes.
