In the USA it is estimated that more than $5 billion US is spent every year on medical treatment, damage, and control in RIFA (red introduced fire ant) pest infestations. Since 2004, the red fire ant has seriously affected Taiwan.
Australia, the US, Taiwan - all have implemented national efforts to eradicate the pest species, however, other than Australia, none have been particularly effective. In Australia an intensive pest program costing A$200 million has eradicated 99% of pest fire ants from the infestation occurring in South East Queensland – but 1% is more than the original arriving population.
