Appearance and physical characteristics
Adults are light brown with two dark longitudal stripes on the prontonum. Adults grow to about 12-15mm in size.
Life cycle
German cockroaches undergo a gradual metamorphosis (egg ~ nymphs ~ adult). Hatching to adulthood in 40 days or 6 to 12 weeks. Egg cases hold 30 to 40 nymphs that may be produced 3 to 4 generations each year. An adults life span is approximately 4 to 6 months.
Habitat
The German Cockroach can be found close to food and moisture, for example around hot water heaters, stove, fridges, underneath drawers and also common area is domestic and commercial kitchens i.e. fast food outlets, food processing plants.
Feeding habits
Consumes organic materials from crumbs to oil grease, eating mainly at night. The adult cockroaches may survive up to one month where there is no food or water available.
Damage & Impact
Contamination may occur from cockroaches through various areas, for example sinks, bench tops, utensils being in contact with vomit, droppings, skins and empty egg cases.
